“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” | 2 Timothy 2:15
The acronym AWANA comes from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. At SCBC, we believe that the Word of God is precious and powerful, and that the memorization and meditation of it transforms hearts and lives. Founded in Chicago over 60 years ago, this powerful ministry teaches young minds and equips parents in leading their children in the way of the Lord.
Our own Awana program began over 30 years ago in 1984, and has been a beloved ministry ever since. Our program is open to our members and regular attenders, as well as other families from the community as room allows. We welcome kindergarteners through 6th grade and meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 during the school year.
First Club Night | September 21st @ 6:15
Each week our kiddos memorize Bible verses at home with their parents and do activities from their workbooks, earning various pins and patches as they work their way through the program. Each program in our club is geared toward a specific age group– Cubbies, Sparks, and T&T (Truth & Training). We teach that the Bible is the Word of God and that it is the final authority for all Christian faith and practice. We teach that the power of God for salvation comes through Scripture (Romans 1:16). Our main goal is that each clubber would come to a personal relationship with Jesus through faith (John 3:3).
In addition to handbook time, each week we play official and unofficial AWANA games. Our goal is to get some exercise (burn energy!), learn teamwork, sportsmanship, have fun and learn to follow instructions. Our kiddos develop friendships with those both on their team and those they compete with. We also learn to practice consideration and kindness toward one another.
Here the we comes together for a time of teaching or crafts. We have special times where the whole club will come together to share a time around a special theme such as creation, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. These are some of our most fun and favorite times as we learn and celebrate together.
